Welland Community Orchard: A Blooming Spring Adventure

There’s many signs of Spring that are all over Welland Community Orchard! The fruit trees are beginning to bud and blossom again, after a rather mild Winter on Southern Vancouver Island. The pluot fruit tree was the first to show its new 2026 flower buds and it’s fully blossoming in early March.

A group of ten people, of various ages, sits closely together on a wooden bench outdoors in Welland Community Orchard park, with bare fruit tree branches overhead and green grass and landscaping in the background. The group, which includes both men and women, is casually dressed in jackets, hats, and sunglasses. The group smiles and gazes at the camera. One person holds a small, yellow spray bottle.

Welland Community Orchard wrapped up the Winter Fruit Tree/Vines Pruning Apprenticeship program in February. We had a good number of passionate participants who enjoyed the hands on learning, over the Winter months. Participants were able to take some cuttings home to try to grow some fruit trees at home.

Three people standing inside a new wooden raised garden bed holding gardening tools; a shovel, a trowel, and a hoe. The person in the middle is holding a cordless drill with their arms raised above their head as a form of celebration, while the other two people are smiling. The garden beds are at Welland Community Orchard, with another raised bed, trees, and cloudy skies in the background.
Quinn taught orchard assistants, Ruby & Dustin how to build two new raised garden beds.

Quinn worked with Welland Community Orchard assistants to build two new raised beds to grow food. The new beds look great and will be reading to sow new food seeds in, very soon. We are getting ready for busy Spring and Summer seasons. Check out Lifecycles Project Society’s Eventbrite page to register for some assorted Spring workshops at the orchard.
